In a staunch reaffirmation of India’s position on Afghanistan, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, articulated the alignment of global objectives with New Delhi’s priorities, particularly the imperative to combat terrorism.

Addressing the UN Security Council session on Afghanistan, Kamboj underscored India’s unwavering focus on the situation in the war-ravaged nation, stressing its direct ramifications on India. “Our goal is to establish enduring peace, security, and stability in Afghanistan,” Kamboj asserted, elucidating India’s comprehensive approach to addressing the crisis. She highlighted India’s active engagement in the recent special envoys’ meeting on Afghanistan held in Qatar, noting the convergence of international aims with India’s fundamental interests.

Whether through supplying wheat and medical aid or offering educational opportunities for Afghan students, India’s assistance underscores its commitment to aiding Afghanistan’s populace amidst adversity

Kamboj delineated crucial areas of mutual focus between the global community and India, spanning counterterrorism endeavours, inclusive governance, safeguarding women, children, and minorities, anti-narcotics initiatives, and humanitarian aid. Lauding Qatar’s crucial role in hosting the meeting, Kamboj stressed the constructive deliberations held on recommendations to tackle the Afghan crisis.

The meeting was attended by a spectrum of stakeholders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and representatives from diverse nations and organisations. The leaders underscored the necessity of a consultative and transparent approach in addressing the Afghan conundrum.

Reflecting on the humanitarian plight in Afghanistan, Kamboj emphasised the urgent requirement for sustained international support. India, she noted, has been actively contributing to humanitarian endeavours, focusing on food security, medical assistance, and education.

As discussions persist on the formation of an international contact group for Afghanistan, Kamboj reiterated India’s stance on the group’s composition, advocating for the inclusion of all principal stakeholders with direct interests in Afghanistan’s future.

Despite the Taliban’s absence from the Doha meeting, the international community remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering peace and stability in Afghanistan, ensuring it does not descend into a hotbed of terrorism that imperils global security.
