THE United States is bracing for an intense heatwave with the weather forecasters warning residents in the eastern and central parts to prepare for the temperatures to soar above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, according to reports. The year has been recorded as the hottest so far and the 12-month global heat record is pointing at global warming.
The hot streaks are expected to affect about 100 million residents across various regions like Texas, New England, the Southwest, and in cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. Temperatures in areas like Boston and Philadelphia are expected to rise up to 95 degrees and 97 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively, mixed with humidity, said reports.
Longest heatwave
There have been reports of a heatwave last week with temperatures rising up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit in Phoenix, Arizona. This extreme weather event is not only notable for its high temperatures but also for its duration, potentially marking the longest heatwave in decades for some areas, reports added. According to the National Weather, “a high risk of heat stress or illnesses for anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration” in the areas expected to witness heat waves. The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings and advisories, highlighting the severity of the situation. The heatwave’s impact extends beyond discomfort, as it poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Pressure on power grids
Moreover, the scorching temperatures are straining power grids as the demand surges. This strain could lead to power outages, further complicating the situation. The heatwave also presents a heightened risk of wildfires, with firefighters already battling blazes in areas southeast of Los Angeles.
