NEW DELHI: Fisheries sector in India plays a significant role in the country’s economy and provides livelihood to millions of fisherfolk. India is the third largest fish producing, and second largest aquaculture producing nation in the world. The Blue Revolution in India demonstrated the importance of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The Government’s Sagar Parikrama is a unique, evolutionary journey envisaged in the sea across the coastal belt demonstrating solidarity with all fisherfolk, fish farmers and concerned stakeholders. It is in the spirit of 75th Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, saluting freedom fighters, sailors, and fishers.
The initiative aims at resolving issues of the fishers and other stakeholders and facilitating their economic upliftment through various fisheries schemes and programmes of the Government.
The fisheries sector provides livelihood to about three crore fishers and fish farmers, and almost twice the number, i.e., close to six crore indirectly, in the processing industry and other allied activities.
Fish is an affordable and rich source of animal protein. It is one of the healthiest options to mitigate hunger and nutrient deficiency. The sector has immense potential to double its exports.
It is essential that sustained and focused attention is given to the fisheries sector through policy and financial support to accelerate its development in a sustainable, responsible, inclusive, and equitable manner.
