Team Blitz India
IN an effort to amplify narratives and perspectives from the Global South, the BRICS, consisting of Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa, is extending its media presence across the African continent through its Moscow-based broadcasting network, TV BRICS.
At the heart of this initiative is TV BRICS, with its programming rooted in diverse offerings from BRICS member countries. Recent weeks have witnessed the forging of partnership agreements between TV BRICS and media entities in Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, and Mozambique.
A unified television channel for BRICS nations was proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2017, to disseminate information about the group’s activities. TV BRICS, under the ownership of MKR Media — a holding company established by Russia’s Interstate Corporation for Development — boasts a potential audience exceeding 3.5 billion people in member countries.
Ayanda Hollow, President of TV BRICS Africa, underscored the inadequacies in international media’s coverage of stories emanating from the Global South.
According to Hollow, TV BRICS is dedicated to presenting stories from the bloc’s nations to a global audience, emphasising the unique perspective they bring. “No one can narrate our own stories quite like we can,” he asserted.
