VARANASI: In a momentous address delivered at the G20 Development Ministers’ meeting in Varanasi on June 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought the issue of development to the forefront, amplifying the concerns of the Global South.
Against the backdrop of the farreaching impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions on Global South nations, including disruptive ramifications in vital sectors such as food, fuel, and fertilisers, PM Modi’s remarks assumed profound significance.

The Prime Minister stressed the urgency of the situation, underscoring the necessity for unified action from the Global South to convey a resolute message to the world. He called for an unwavering commitment to an action plan that confronts the challenges confronting these nations head-on.
Gravity of disruptions
By highlighting the gravity of the disruptions arising from the pandemic and geopolitical tensions, PM Modi sought to galvanise support and rally collective efforts to mitigate the adverse consequences endured by the Global South.
PM Modi went on to advocate for reforms in multilateral financial institutions, specifically urging the expansion of eligibility criteria to ensure equitable access to finance for those in need. By addressing this critical issue, he aimed to foster greater inclusivity and level the playing field, enabling nations requiring financial assistance to readily access resources.
In support of his argument, he gave the example of India’s Aspirational Districts programme, which stands as a tangible testament to how targeted initiatives can propel transformative growth, positioning these districts as beacons of development.
‘Adopt India model’
By encouraging the G20 Development Ministers to delve into this model and explore its potential for expediting progress towards the Agenda 2030 goals, PM Modi demonstrated India’s commitment to sharing effective strategies and nurturing collaboration among member nations.
The Prime Minister also underscored the pivotal role of highquality data in informing effective policy-making, optimal resource allocation, and enhanced public service delivery. Drawing attention to the deepening data divide, he emphasised the urgent need for technology democratisation as a pivotal tool to bridge this gap.
PM Modi showcased India’s strides in digitalisation, where technology has become an empowering force, facilitating data accessibility and ensuring inclusivity. By extending a helping hand and offering partner countries insights gleaned from India’s experiences, PM Modi aimed to foster meaningful dialogues, exchange knowledge, and encourage the adoption of effective data practices in developing nations.
Women empowerment
Additionally, PM Modi highlighted the significance of sustainable practices and drew attention to the Mission LiFE, launched in 2022. He reiterated the transformative potential of gender equality and women’s empowerment in accomplishing the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recognising their pivotal role in driving social and economic progress.
The choice of Varanasi, PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency, as the venue for his address added a layer of symbolism and depth. Describing the city as the living embodiment of democracy, steeped in knowledge, culture, and spirituality, he extended a warm invitation to the assembled delegates, encouraging them to immerse themselves in the essence of Kashi and discover its profound spirit.
