LONDON: In an address that carries with it the weight of history, King Charles III set the tone for a new era in the United Kingdom, announcing his Government’s commitment to making the “difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better.”

This pronouncement came as part of the King’s Speech, a decisive moment marking the monarch’s role in outlining Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s legislative agenda during the parliamentary opening ceremony.

Delivering the first King’s Speech in over seven decades, King Charles addressed the House of Lords. It took place against the backdrop of formidable challenges, including the ongoing impact of the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which have presented substantial, long-term hurdles for the United Kingdom.

“It is mindful of the legacy of service and devotion to this country set by my beloved mother, the late Queen, that I deliver this, the first King’s Speech in over 70 years.

The impact of Covid and the war in Ukraine have created significant long-term challenges for the United Kingdom. That is why my Government’s priority is to make the difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better,” said King Charles in his speech.

Accompanied by Queen Camilla, King Charles arrived at the Palace of Westminster for the State Opening of Parliament. Incidentally, this marks the monarch’s final speech before a national election, setting the stage for Rishi Sunak’s maiden opportunity to outline significant legislative plans as the Prime Minister, a role he assumed just over a year ago.

The last parliamentary session was convened in May 2022, during the tenure of then-PM Boris Johnson, while Queen Elizabeth II occupied the throne.
