INDIA’S Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services made their debut in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on February 12, marked by a virtual ceremony in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside the leadership of both the nations.

Present in the virtual meeting were Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Both underscored the significance of this collaborative endeavour amid burgeoning bilateral economic engagements between India and the two nations.

The brainchild of National Payments Corporation of India, UPI is a beacon of innovation, offering real-time, instantaneous payment solutions through mobile devices. Complementing this, RuPay, India’s indigenous card payment network, enjoys widespread acceptance across retail outlets, ATMs, and online platforms.

“Today signifies a momentous juncture where our longstanding ties are being seamlessly integrated into the digital realm. This exemplifies our unwavering dedication towards the advancement of our people.

Through the integration of financial technologies, our connectivity transcends borders, fortifying ties between nations. The UPI of India now embarks on a novel role – fostering unity among partners with India,” said PM Modi.

Emphasising the impact of digital infrastructure, PM Modi remarked, “Even the most modest entrepreneur in the remotest village now embraces digital transactions for its unparalleled convenience and expediency.”
