China’s behaviour comes in for flak

GERMAN Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Tobias Lindner, voiced concern over Beijing’s increasingly assertive behaviour, which at times challenges the bedrock of international rules-based order.

Speaking at an interaction during the Raisina Dialogue, Lindner underscored the gravity of China’s stance, particularly in its handling of issues concerning Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the border discord with India.

“Our observation is that China is becoming progressively assertive, at times even casting doubt upon the sanctity of international rulesbased order,” Lindner emphasised, echoing apprehensions shared by many nations grappling with China’s rising influence.

Highlighting the imperative for upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity, Lindner stressed the necessity of resolving disputes through peaceful means and mutual consent. These sentiments were echoed in Germany’s inaugural China strategy, which extends to fostering collaborative ties with significant regional players such as India, Japan, and Australia.

Dismissing notions of European preoccupation solely with Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Lindner asserted the interconnectedness of global security dynamics, with reverberations across the Indo-Pacific, including implications for India’s food security and energy stability.

Addressing Russia’s incursion into Ukraine, Lindner condemned the violation of established norms, emphasising the shared interest in upholding the territorial integrity of nations, a sentiment resonating with India despite potential divergences in UN voting patterns.
