NEW DELHI: Borge Brende, President of World Economic Forum, has said that India is basking in a “honeymoon phase,” particularly with Europe and the US, as it ascends in influence and economic prowess.

Discussing the relationship between economic success and global impact, Brende highlighted India’s evolving geopolitical landscape, at the India Today Conclave. Acknowledging the challenges emanating from neighbouring states, Brende said that India’s burgeoning economy will bolster its political stature, affording it greater leverage in the future.

According to Brende, the challenges that India has to tackle mainly come from its neighbours, but the country is in a “honeymoon phase” globally.

However, Director of Carnegie India, Rudra Chaudhuri, countered Brende’s characterisation, citing India’s recent geopolitical hurdles, notably the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which compelled a reassessment of strategic partnerships. “It pushed us to think of diversification of resources, reconsider our relations with Russia and turn to countries that have the capability to deliver to us and our interests over the next many days,” Chaudhuri said.

Samir Saran, President of the Observer Research Foundation, envisaged a decade of growth and prosperity for India but cautioned that it would also entail navigating increased scrutiny and criticism.
