BANGLADESH’S Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud believes that the resolution to the Rohingya crisis lies in their repatriation with civil rights and dignity intact. The key to achieving it lies with India’s escalated involvement, coupled with Chinese mediation, as pivotal to accomplishing this intricate task.

Addressing a seminar on the Rohingya crisis at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Mahmud emphasised the crucial role of regional powers like India and China. He stated, “Regional powers like India and China are vital… if we can ensure their enhanced engagement, we believe, the crisis could be resolved.”

Mahmud mentioned that during a recent visit, US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu provided some suggestions to handle the crisis, but refrained from divulging them at the moment.

As the chief guest, Mahmud disclosed that Myanmar authorities are showing willingness to initiate the Rohingya repatriation process, aiming to alleviate the mounting global pressure on the country.

The foreign minister highlighted Bangladesh’s diplomatic efforts to exert pressure on Myanmar for the repatriation of its nationals, juxtaposing it with the Gambia’s filing of a case with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Myanmar.
