Nobel Peace Prize has three winners this year

OSLO: The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties. Annie Ernaux of France was awarded this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature. Ernaux was awarded “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.”

India skips the UNHRC resolution on Xinjiang

UNITED NATIONS: India abstained from voting on a draft resolution in the UN Human Rights Council on holding a debate on the human rights situation in China’s restive Xinjiang region. The draft resolution on “holding a debate on the situation of human rights in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China” was rejected in the 47-member Council.

Developing economies need $1T for net-zero

WASHINGTON: The IMF has said developing economies needed an investment of $1 trillion a year by 2030 solely in the renewable energy sector to stay on track to achieve the net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050. Observing that emerging markets and developing economies account for two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions and many are highly vulnerable to climate hazards, it said they would need significant financing in the coming years to cut emissions.

British holidaymakers ‘cancelling’ India trip

LONDON: Thousands of British holidaymakers cancelled trips to India owing to last minute tourist visa rule change, The Times UK reported. The sudden change in the rule required Britons to present themselves in person at visa centres in the UK and apply for tourist visas. The Indian High Commission, however, said there have been no changes in the visa rules
