NEW DELHI: Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, appeared in public for the first time in months on July 5 to take part in a religious ritual in Tehran, as tensions with Israel have escalated.
The visit comes after reports that Khamenei had been hiding in a safe location since the outbreak of a 12-day aerial war with Israel that killed several top Iranian leaders, such as military chiefs and nuclear experts. According to Reuters, state television aired footage showing Khamenei entering a hall where a large gathering was observing Ashura, the most significant day in the Shi’ite Muslim calendar. Attendees were seen chanting as Khamenei, wrapped in his traditional black robes, walked into the venue often used for key state and religious functions.

This is the first reported public appearance of the Supreme Leader since the war started on June 13. Throughout the first few days of the air raids, Khamenei avoided making any in-person appearances, choosing to issue pre-recorded messages.

Due to growing security concerns during the conflict, Khamenei’s absence from public events has sparked speculation about his whereabouts. His speeches during this period, including his annual address to mark key religious observances, were broadcast via pre-recorded video. Iranian officials later clarified that the decision was made in light of safety protocols amid escalating regional tensions.
