NEW DELHI: The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY) is applicable for houses built in both urban and rural areas. The amount of financial aid for beneficiaries varies between accessible and far-flung areas.

Under PMAY-U, the carpet area of houses differs as per the economic section of each beneficiary. For Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Lower Income Group (LIG), whose household income does not exceed Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 6 lakh respectively, beneficiaries can build houses with a carpet area of 322 square feet and 645 square feet. For lower-middle income groups, it is 1,722.22 square feet and for higher-middle income groups, the carpet area is capped at 2,152.78 square feet.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has further initiated Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs), a sub-scheme under PMAY-U. This provides ease-of-living to urban migrants and the poor in the industrial sector as well as in the non-formal urban economy to get access to dignified affordable rental housing close to their workplace.

MoHUA has also initiated Global Housing Technology Challenge – India (GHTC-India) which aims to identify and mainstream a basket of innovative construction technologies from across the globe for the housing construction sector that are sustainable, eco-friendly, and disaster-resilient.

In addition, it offers a web-based monitoring system, CLSS Awas Portal (CLAP), which is a common platform where all stakeholders i.e., MoHUA, Central Nodal Agencies, Primary Lending Institutions, beneficiaries, and citizens are integrated in real-time environment. The portal facilitates processing of applications along with tracking of subsidy status by beneficiaries. CLSS tracker has also been incorporated in the PMAY(U) mobile app and UMANG platform.
