A ₹61-Crore Weekend: The Odyssey Sets a Nolan Record in India

NEW DELHI: India’s cinemas have turned a big opening into a genuine phenomenon. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the IMAX-shot retelling of the Homeric epic led by Matt Damon, closed its three-day opening weekend at about ₹61.3 crore net in India — ₹17.4 crore on Thursday’s opening, rising to around ₹22 crore on Saturday and holding firm on Sunday. It is comfortably the biggest-ever Indian opening for a Nolan film, clearing the pace his Oppenheimer set, and it arrives inside the strongest worldwide launch of the director’s career.

The language split tells its own story about India’s market. The English version did the heavy lifting at roughly ₹48.5 crore, with the Hindi (about ₹7.25 crore), Telugu (₹3.4 crore) and Tamil (₹2.15 crore) versions adding a meaningful tail — a reminder that a global tentpole now plays across the country in several tongues at once. The premium formats did much of the work: IMAX and large-format auditoriums ran near capacity, proof that Indian audiences will still pay for spectacle when a film is built for the biggest screen.

Built for the biggest screen: The Odyssey closed its opening weekend near ₹61.3 cr net — the biggest-ever Indian opening for a Christopher Nolan film, led by English and premium-format shows.

Give people a film worth leaving the house for, and India will still fill the hall — monsoon or not. A record weekend is a vote of confidence in the big screen itself.

At a Glance

• Opening weekend (India): about ₹61.3 crore net over three days
• Daily: ~₹17.4 cr (Thu), ~₹22 cr (Sat), holding on Sunday
• Languages: English ~₹48.5 cr; Hindi ~₹7.25 cr; Telugu ~₹3.4 cr; Tamil ~₹2.15 cr
• Record: biggest-ever Indian opening for a Christopher Nolan film

Why does an opening weekend belong beside the day’s harder news? Because cinema is one of India’s great cultural industries and a large, job-rich economy in its own right — producers and technicians, multiplex and single-screen staff, and the vast informal web of trades that a film release feeds. A strong theatrical run also settles, once more, a question the streaming age kept asking: the big-screen experience still has a firm and profitable place in Indian life.

The constructive read is that a healthy box office rests on choice and access — a steady supply of films worth the ticket, across languages and budgets, shown on screens that reach beyond the metros. The way forward is to keep widening that access: more screens in smaller towns, support for regional cinema, and formats that make a night out feel like an event, so that a record weekend is proof of a durable, diverse creative economy rather than a one-off spike. Handled well, a monsoon weekend at the movies is a glimpse of an industry in good health.
