NEW DELHI: One of the most powerful Earth-observation satellites ever built is now working for India — and its timing could hardly be better. NISAR, the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar mission launched from Sriharikota in July 2025, entered its full science phase early this year and, through 2026, has begun releasing its calibrated global data to researchers. Using twin radars that see through cloud and darkness alike, it maps the elevation of the planet’s land and ice four to six times a month at a resolution of five to ten metres — a standing, all-weather watch over a restless Earth.
For a country in the middle of a peak monsoon, the capability reads like a tool built for the moment. NISAR is designed to detect the tiniest shifts in the ground and to track exactly the hazards filling this week’s forecasts — landslides, floods, subsiding land, and the slow strain that precedes earthquakes — as well as changes in forests, glaciers and farmland. Because its radar works day or night and sees straight through monsoon cloud, it can map a flooded valley or a slipping hillside when ordinary optical satellites are blind.

Handled that way, a satellite launched a year ago becomes, in this monsoon and every one after, a steady set of eyes helping India stay a step ahead of the weather.
