An Eye on a Changing Earth: NISAR Begins to Deliver for India

India’s first private rocket, Vikram-1 lifts off

NEW DELHI: One of the most powerful Earth-observation satellites ever built is now working for India — and its timing could hardly be better. NISAR, the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar mission launched from Sriharikota in July 2025, entered its full science phase early this year and, through 2026, has begun releasing its calibrated global data to researchers. Using twin radars that see through cloud and darkness alike, it maps the elevation of the planet’s land and ice four to six times a month at a resolution of five to ten metres — a standing, all-weather watch over a restless Earth.

For a country in the middle of a peak monsoon, the capability reads like a tool built for the moment. NISAR is designed to detect the tiniest shifts in the ground and to track exactly the hazards filling this week’s forecasts — landslides, floods, subsiding land, and the slow strain that precedes earthquakes — as well as changes in forests, glaciers and farmland. Because its radar works day or night and sees straight through monsoon cloud, it can map a flooded valley or a slipping hillside when ordinary optical satellites are blind.

An all-weather watch: NISAR, the NASA-ISRO radar satellite launched in 2025, now maps land and ice 4–6 times a month at 5–10 m — tracking floods, landslides and quakes through cloud and darkness.

A satellite that sees through cloud is a quiet kind of insurance. The value of NISAR is not the launch India remembers, but the disasters it helps the country see coming.

At a Glance

• Mission: NISAR, a joint NASA-ISRO radar satellite; launched from Sriharikota, July 2025
• Now: in full science operations; calibrated global data being released through 2026
• Reach: maps land and ice 4–6 times a month at 5–10 m resolution
• Uses: floods, landslides, earthquakes, glaciers, forests and crops

Why does an orbiting radar deserve attention beside the harder news of the day? Because its data flows straight into the things that protect lives and livelihoods — sharper flood and landslide maps for disaster managers, early signs of ground movement near dams and railways, and season-by-season readings of soil moisture and crop health for farmers. It is also a marker of how far India’s space partnerships have come: a flagship mission built and flown with the United States, with the data shared openly for science and public good.

The constructive read is that Earth observation is among the highest-return investments a country like India can make — one satellite quietly serving agriculture, water management and disaster response at once. The way forward is to turn that raw data into everyday decisions: feeding NISAR’s readings into district flood warnings, crop-insurance systems and infrastructure monitoring, and training the analysts who translate radar into action. Handled that way, a satellite launched a year ago becomes, in this monsoon and every one after, a steady set of eyes helping India stay a step ahead of the weather.

New Delhi, 13 October : India’s fintech sector raised $2.2 billion in the first nine months of 2026 (January 1, 2026–September 30, 2026), up 14 per cent from $1.9 billion in the same period a year earlier, a report said. The report from data intelligence platform Tracxn Technologies Limited said funding rounds dipped from 260 to 153, adding that the funding was concentrated in a smaller number of large late‑stage rounds, with five mega‑rounds of $100 million or more accounting for $1.1 billion or 48 per cent of total capital. The report said in the first nine months of 2026, digital lending and payments topped the category rankings, while Bengaluru accounts for over three-fifths of all capital raised. On the exit side, IPOs saw a 50 per cent uptick while overall acquisitions slowed. As many as 30 companies raised their first funding round, down 49 per cent from 59 in the previous year. Series A and later rounds totalled 77, down 31 per cent from 112. Late-stage funding (Series C+, PE, and pre-IPO) led the mix, rising 95 per cent to $1.5 billion in the first nine months of 2026 — up from $751 million during the same period in the previous year. This capital surge pushed late-stage investments to 67 per cent of total market funding, the report noted. Earlier stages experienced contractions in capital and deal counts. Early-stage funding fell 33 per cent to $668 million across 52 rounds, compared to $1 billion across 82 rounds in nine months of 2025. Seed funding fell 57 per cent to $73.8 million across 76 rounds, down from $173 million across 148 rounds. New unicorns crossed the billion-dollar threshold in an average of 7.1 years after their Series A funding. Moreover, the industry saw 3 IPOs in nine months of 2026, up 50 per cent from 2 in the previous year, alongside 11 acquisitions, down 45 per cent from 20.
