Three Boxes Ticked: Gaganyaan Clears Its Safety Milestones

Skyroot Vikram-1 Makes India a Private Space Launch Power

NEW DELHI: India’s first human spaceflight edged meaningfully closer this month, and it did so in the most reassuring way possible — through safety. ISRO has completed three important qualification tests for the Gaganyaan crew module, checking how the capsule protects its occupants at splashdown, how the crew and service modules separate cleanly in flight, and how the module holds its structural integrity as its parachutes deploy. Each is a box that has to be ticked before any astronaut can be strapped in.

The tests slot into a deliberate sequence. The first uncrewed mission, Gaganyaan G1, is being built for the third quarter of this year to rehearse the whole flight profile end to end. A second uncrewed flight, G2, is planned for later in 2026 carrying Vyommitra, a humanoid robot designed to sit in the astronaut’s seat, monitor the cabin and stand in for a human crew while engineers watch how every system behaves. Only after these dress rehearsals will India attempt a crewed launch, targeted for 2027.

Rehearsing the return: ISRO has cleared three Gaganyaan crew-module tests — splashdown safety, module separation and structural integrity during parachute deployment — ahead of an uncrewed G1 flight this year and a robot-carrying G2 later in 2026.

Before a nation sends a human to orbit, it sends a robot, a rehearsal and a hundred tests. The applause is for the launch; the achievement is in everything that comes first.

At a Glance

• Cleared: three crew-module tests — splashdown, separation, parachute-phase integrity
• G1: first uncrewed test flight targeted for Q3 2026
• G2: second uncrewed flight later in 2026, carrying the robot Vyommitra
• Crewed flight: planned for 2027; seven ISRO missions targeted this year

There is a reason to celebrate the unglamorous work. Human spaceflight forgives no shortcuts, and the discipline of proving every abort, parachute and separation before a person rides the rocket is the entire point of the exercise. A humanoid stand-in like Vyommitra lets engineers gather real flight data on the life-support and cabin systems at no risk to a crew — a smart, thrifty way to buy confidence. With ISRO chairman V. Narayanan pointing to as many as seven missions across the year, the human programme sits inside a busy, maturing launch calendar rather than standing alone.

The constructive way forward is patience rewarded. Every ground test that passes retires a risk; every uncrewed flight rehearses the day that will matter most. Handled this way, India’s path to becoming only the fourth nation to launch its own citizens into orbit is being paved carefully, milestone by milestone — and the deliberate pace is not a delay but the very thing that will make the eventual launch safe.
