A Record Reel: “Dhurandhar” Powers Hindi Cinema’s Big Year

NEW DELHI: Hindi cinema is having a year to remember, and one film sits at the top of the marquee. “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” has emerged as 2026’s highest-grossing Hindi release, taking around ₹1,375 crore in India and close to ₹1,850 crore worldwide — a haul built on a record opening day of about ₹90 crore and a first weekend near ₹443 crore. After seasons of anxious debate over whether audiences would return to theatres, the tills have answered emphatically.

What is encouraging is the breadth beneath the record. “Dhurandhar” leads, but it is not alone: big-canvas titles such as “Border 2” and mainstream entertainers across genres have all found audiences, giving 2026 a spread of hits rather than a single tent-pole holding up the year. That range — action, drama, family fare and comedy all drawing crowds — is the healthiest possible sign for an industry that employs lakhs and whose fortunes ripple far beyond the leading names.

The halls are full again: “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” has become 2026’s top Hindi grosser with roughly ₹1,375 crore in India and near ₹1,850 crore worldwide — part of a broad, multi-genre run that has made this a banner year at the box office.

A blockbuster is a headline; a spread of hits is an industry. This year Indian cinema has both — and lakhs of livelihoods ride on the difference.

At a Glance

• Top film: “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” — ~₹1,375 cr in India, ~₹1,850 cr worldwide
• Records: opening day ~₹90 cr; opening weekend ~₹443 cr
• Depth: “Border 2” and other titles add a broad 2026 slate of hits
• Behind the screen: a vast crafts-and-services economy rides on every release

Cinema’s health is a cultural signal as much as a commercial one. Indian films are among the country’s furthest-reaching soft-power exports, carrying its stories, music and languages to diaspora audiences and new markets from the Gulf to Africa. A strong box office at home funds the ambition to travel farther abroad — and to keep backing the range of stories that a country this varied deserves to see on the big screen.

The constructive way forward is to widen the base still further: nurture regional cinemas and their crossover hits, back fresh writing and new directors, and keep modernising screens and ticket pricing so a night at the movies stays within reach of the ordinary family. The audience has returned in force; the task now is to keep giving it reasons to come back, week after week, across the whole calendar rather than only on the festival weekends.
