Serving the development agenda

The CBI has been at the forefront of the Modi Government’s fight against corruption, thereby helping the cause of development. With his avowed mission of zero-tolerance for corruption, PM Modi has not only ensured full autonomy to the CBI and other agencies involved in fighting corruption but also given them more powers to act.

During the last seven years, the CBI has unearthed a number of high-profile cases of corruption, made significant headway in extradition processes, and initiated stringent action against perpetrators of bank frauds. Alongside, it has also come under persistent attack from Opposition-ruled states, many of which have tried to stall its probes. This week’s Cover Story details all these aspects along with a supporting story that busts many myths about the primary function of the CBI.

The Centerspread focus is on Air India going back to the Tata Group, almost seven decades after it was nationalised. The move caps years of efforts to dispose of the struggling airline that had become a burden on taxpayers. Besides, it shows the Modi Government’s commitment to not just the disinvestment process, but also the entire gamut of liberalisation. Though the Tata Group has a challenging task ahead in turning around the money-losing carrier, it has got on to the job with utmost urgency. The new Board of Management is in place, a fresh roadmap with four core areas has been readied and a global hunt for a new CEO is underway. The main story and a related box incorporate all these developments.

It’s a happy coincidence that during the week we picked Israel as the focus country for our Globetrotting column, an announcement came from Tel Aviv regarding the first official visit of PM Naftali Bennett to India on April 2. As the two countries complete 30 years of formal diplomatic relations, our story takes stock of the defense deals and cooperation in science, technology, and agriculture. It also elaborates on India’s extended engagement with Israel ever since PM Modi came to power. A related story talks of India’s Jewish connection with Israel.

In a huge relief to the aviation and travel sectors, international flight operations from India are set to resume after a gap of two years. We cover this news development in detail as besides reflecting the Government’s grip over the pandemic situation in the country, the decision will go a long way in bolstering the economy. The edition also includes a set of development related news reports, including India joining the elite club with its Arctic policy; experts dispelling fears over Covid-19 resurgence; the Vice-President’s call for the restoration of ancient teaching-learning systems and traditional knowledge, and the Government’s commitment to the welfare of security personnel and their kin in J&K. Relish the package!
