BY 2026, India is projected to become the world’s preeminent importer of metallurgical coal, a vital ingredient for its burgeoning steel industry. This forecast, by the International Energy Agency (IEA), bears testimony to India’s industrial vigour which demands a substantial increase in metallurgical coal, surpassing even China’s colossal intake.
The 2022 global coal trade witnessed a modest 1 per cent increase, reaching 1376 million tonne, with thermal coal constituting the lion’s share. However, this growth is not uniform. While thermal coal witnessed a slight rise, metallurgical coal’s trade volume contracted marginally by 1 per cent. The import patterns reflect a strategic pivot towards the Asia Pacific region, with India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh becoming focal points due to Europe’s waning demand.
Indonesia, the world’s largest coal exporter by volume in 2022, along with Australia and Russia, is reshaping the global coal landscape. Yet, the European Union’s sanctions on Russian imports in response to geopolitical upheavals have precipitated a realignment of coal supply chains, increasingly orienting Russian exports towards Asia, with China and India as pivotal destinations.
This shift is emblematic of a larger transition where traditional coal powerhouses like Europe taper their reliance on coal in favor of greener alternatives. Conversely, Asia’s coal imports, particularly in China and India, are expected to soar, accounting for an estimated 47 per cent of global imports. Sanction-induced discounts have made Russian coal particularly attractive to its Asian neighbours, further cementing the subcontinent’s role as a burgeoning coal hub.
By 2026, IEA anticipates a 12 per cent reduction in global coal trade, due to the rise in domestic coal production in key economies and a concerted shift away from coal utilisation in regions like Europe. Despite the overall downtrend, metallurgical coal exports are on the cusp of a slight increase, underscoring the commodity’s critical role in industrial applications.
India’s ascendancy in coal imports also raises critical questions about sustainability and environmental impact, compelling the country to balance its industrial expansion with commitments to climate change mitigation. As the global coal market recalibrates, India’s strategic position will be pivotal in shaping both its domestic policy and its influence on the international stage.
