MUMBAI: Maharashtra’s Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) project on the Mumbai-Pune New Expressway is likely to be functional by mid-October, according to reports.
The project, under the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), will be the first of its kind in the state once it becomes operational. It is aimed at enhancing the management and safety of the expressway.
MSRDC is preparing a proposal to equip altogether nine highways with ITMS which will cover close to 2,000 km. This will include 470 km (approx) in Mumbai, 780 km (approx) in Pune, and 455 km (approx) in the Nagpur regions.
The highways have been chosen based on their high traffic density and accident rates. The new system will enhance road safety and reduce violations of highway norms by motorists.
The project is expected to cost around Rs 60 crore and would be carried out under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The technology is designed to offer travellers with critical insights and real-time updates on road conditions like traffic, closures, and other essential information like weather predictions.
A visual message system that will serve as a channel for delivering such updates to those travelling on the expressway is prominently displayed inside the ITMS arsenal. On the Mumbai-Pune route, 106 locations have been identified where more than 430 high-quality cameras – equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to detect up to 17 types of violations – have been installed.
