THE Maharashtra Government has decided to crack the whip following an increase in circulation of deepfake images, videos and forged pictures on the internet during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Last week the state Government directed the police to take stern action against those who are caught creating such content. Deepfake content such as photos and videos are created by manipulating images of people to look and sound like somebody else. Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence are used to match even facial expressions and make the artificial images speak in different voices. Technology can be used to create, alter, and engineer almost any face or person online.
The order for stern action against those using technology with malafide intention came after the Mumbai police registered a case against a Youth Congress social media handle and 16 others for allegedly sharing a deepfake clip of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Government has asked the Maharashtra’s Director-General of Police to put down such practices and ensure a clean and transparent electoral process. The police have been asked to take a stern action.
