MUMBAI University has issued an ultimatum to all colleges under its affiliation, to form College Development Committees (CDCs). During a recent meeting of the Management Council of Mumbai University it was rued that only 350 of the 894 colleges have set up CDCs so far. Out of these, only 150 have submitted their reports to the university.
These committees play a vital role in crafting comprehensive development plans for their respective colleges. The urgency to address this issue arose during a Senate meeting held in March, where concerns were raised about the absence of CDCs. Members underscored the significant role these committees play in advising and devising plans for academic, administrative, and infrastructural enhancements within colleges.
A CDC comprises the college principal, representatives from management, teaching and non-teaching staff, students, as well as external individuals from various sectors. Mandated under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016, the formation of CDCs is deemed essential for all colleges.
Beyond the planning and execution of college growth initiatives, these committees are entrusted with tasks like brainstorming and recommending new courses, as well as ensuring updated safety and security measures. According to regulations, CDCs are expected to convene at least four times in an academic year and submit an updated growth plan annually.
The Management Council of Mumbai University has declared that action will be taken against colleges failing to comply with the CDC formation mandate within the stipulated timeframe, as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act 2016.
