NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on July 5,approved the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, The bill is likely to be introduced in the Monsoon Session of Parliament starting July 20. All online and offline data in India will fall under its legal domain.
However, personal data can be processed under this bill only if an individual has consented to it. But, there are some exceptions for when the government might need data on grounds of national security and law and order.
There is a provision to form a Data Protection Board to monitor the provisions of the Act. Those collecting under provisions of bill will have to secure it, and later delete the data after use.
The Data Protection Bill was first drafted in November 2022. It went through several rounds of public consultations, following which a second draft of the bill was prepared.
