Public Finance : Both Deficits Fell in One Year
The revenue deficit stood at 1.78 per cent of GDP in 2024-25 and was down 26.24 per cent on the previous year; the fiscal deficit was 4.62 per cent, down 8.27 per cent. The detail few noticed in the CAG’s Report No. 6 of 2026: direct taxes now make up 57.15 per cent of gross tax revenue.
Taxation : Imports Are Carrying GST Growth
Gross GST for July 2026 was ₹2,11,205 crore, up 15.4 per cent. The composition is the story. Domestic collections rose 10.1 per cent to ₹1,44,695 crore; IGST on imports rose 28.8 per cent to ₹66,511 crore. Nearly three times the growth rate came from the import leg.
Trade : Britain’s Model Gives India More
On the British government’s own export-support platform, CETA is expected to raise Indian GDP by £5.1 billion a year and British GDP by £4.8 billion. Recomputed by this desk, India takes 51.52 per cent of the £9.9 billion combined gain. No Indian modelling of the agreement has been published.
Rural Connectivity : Fibre Laid, Signal Missing
BharatNet has reached service-ready status in 2.19 lakh gram panchayats, 96.70 per cent of its revised scope, on ₹39,888 crore of an approved ₹42,068 crore. Of those service-ready panchayats, the CAG found in August that 33.20 per cent were actually operational.
Science : A Sandwich With No Carbon
Chemists at IIT Madras and the Indian Institute of Science have made the first carbon-free analogue of ferrocene — osmium held between two boron-hydrogen rings. Published in Science and announced on 5 May 2026, it settles a question inorganic chemists have carried for about seventy-five years.
Diplomacy : Nine Days, Two Countries, One G20
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is on a 25 August to 2 September visit to Canada and the United States, leading India’s delegation to the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting at Asheville, North Carolina on 31 August and 1 September under the American presidency.
Forests : A Fund Waiting at the Door
At the close of 2024-25, ₹10,380.36 crore of compensatory afforestation money collected from users was still pending disbursement to States and Union Territories, the CAG recorded at paragraph 3.1.2 of Report No. 6 of 2026. A further ₹2,192.95 crore sat in bank accounts rather than the Public Account.
Taxpayers : A Longer Window to Correct Returns
From assessment year 2026-27 the deadline for filing a revised income-tax return runs to 31 March of the assessment year itself, rather than the older, tighter cut-off. A revised return filed after 31 December attracts an additional fee under section 234I. The change is on the Income Tax Department’s own portal.

The International Solar Alliance named Zimbabwe, Senegal and the Seychelles as its first three Country Partnership Frameworks in Africa, at the eighth meeting of its Regional Committee for Africa held at Victoria Falls from 24 to 27 August 2026. One landlocked economy, one coastal state, one island nation.
Customs : A Scheme Running Without a Clock
The Project Import Regulations of 1986 set no time limit for registering a project or for completing imports under a registered contract, the CAG found in Report No. 27 of 2026. Clearance delays in the sample ran from three days to 1,149. The auditor made eleven recommendations to the CBIC.
