NEW DELHI: India registered 28,27,126 electric vehicles in the twelve months from July 2025 to June 2026, according to Vahan dashboard data excluding low-speed electric two-wheelers. Nearly 28.3 lakh vehicles in a year is the threshold at which a market stops being described as emerging and starts being planned for — by component suppliers deciding where to build capacity, by power distribution companies forecasting load, and by financiers deciding what an electric vehicle is worth at resale. Tata Motors leads with more than 38% of the market, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India.
The shape of the product pipeline confirms that the market has broadened. July 2026 brought an unusually wide spread of launches across price brackets: the Kia Syros EV at about ₹13.50 lakh, the Tata Sierra EV at around ₹18.79 lakh, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser EBELLA at roughly ₹23.60 lakh, alongside conventional launches including the Maruti Brezza, Toyota Hilux and Nissan Tekton. At the entry end, the Blinq RYDE arrived as the most affordable newly launched car in India at about ₹4.50 lakh with a claimed range of 250 kilometres — a price point that matters more for adoption arithmetic than any premium launch does.
The next constraint is the plug: with registrations past 28 lakh a year, charging density and grid planning matter more to adoption than any single vehicle launch.
A market is mature when the interesting question moves from the car to the infrastructure around it. India’s electric-vehicle debate has just made that move.

The concentration in the leaderboard is worth reading carefully rather than as a simple statement about winners. A market where one manufacturer holds over 38% is an early market in which the first serious mover has captured the buyers who were going to adopt regardless of price signals. What happens next — whether that share erodes as more competitive products arrive, and how quickly — is the best single indicator of whether India’s EV transition is broadening beyond early adopters into the mass market where the emissions arithmetic actually changes.
The constraint ahead is not vehicles. It is charging density, resale value and grid readiness, and each responds to a different intervention. Charging is a coordination problem best solved by making it a condition of urban development approvals rather than a subsidy line. Resale value is an information problem, which battery state-of-health certification standards can largely fix. Grid readiness is a planning problem, and the useful move is to require distribution companies to publish EV load forecasts by feeder so that reinforcement happens ahead of demand rather than after complaints. India has demonstrated it can build the demand side of this market faster than most observers expected. The constructive next phase is to give the same attention to the far less visible half — the plugs, the wires and the used-car market that will decide whether the second 28 lakh vehicles arrive faster than the first.
