NEW DELHI: Popcorn is a small crop with an awkward secret. India grows a great deal of maize and very little of the particular maize that pops well, and for years the seed for the good stuff came from abroad. Two hybrids bred in Andhra Pradesh have now been released to close that gap.
The Vice-President, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, launched India’s first non-genetically-modified high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seeds at Musunuru in Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh, on 24 August 2026. The two hybrids are named Krisna459 and Godari234. They are the product of a scientific and commercial collaboration between the ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research and Gourmet Popcornica, begun in February 2021.
What ‘high expansion’ actually means
A popcorn kernel is a small pressure vessel. Inside a hard, moisture-tight pericarp sits starchy endosperm holding a fixed quantity of water. Heat the kernel and that water becomes steam; the shell holds until the pressure inside is enough to burst it, and the starch gelatinises and inflates in the instant of release. How far it inflates — the ratio of popped volume to unpopped volume, which the trade calls expansion — is what separates a premium kernel from an ordinary one.
Expansion is a breeding problem, not a processing one. It depends on the thickness and integrity of the pericarp, on the proportion of hard to soft starch, and on the moisture the kernel holds at harvest. Ordinary field maize does not pop well because it was never bred to. Getting high expansion together with the traits an Indian farmer actually needs — tolerance to local pests, a duration short enough to fit the cropping calendar, and a competitive yield — is the whole of the difficulty, and it is why the premium seed was imported.
The collaboration’s account is that Krisna459 and Godari234 match the kernel size and popping expansion of the leading imported benchmark while carrying the pest tolerance, short duration and yield that Indian conditions demand.

Why it matters for India
The value chain the release attaches itself to supports more than 17,500 farming families across about 40,000 acres. Those are not large numbers by the standards of Indian agriculture. They are, however, the numbers of a crop that pays: popcorn maize sells at a premium to field maize precisely because the quality specification is narrow, and a farmer who can meet it earns more from the same acre.
The import substitution matters for a second reason. Seed for a specialty crop is a recurring foreign-exchange cost and a recurring dependency, and it is a dependency that binds the farmer as tightly as the processor: he cannot plant what he cannot buy. A hybrid bred in India, held by an Indian public research institute, removes that particular hostage. This is what Atmanirbhar Bharat looks like at the level of one crop and one seed packet.
Where it stands, stated plainly
Two things should be said carefully. This is a conventional plant-breeding release, not a laboratory finding, and it has not been reported in a peer-reviewed journal; what exists is a public release by the institute and its partner and a launch by the Vice-President. And it is a first commercial release, which means the evidence for the claimed expansion and pest tolerance rests on trial data held by the breeders rather than on a season of farmer experience across agro-climatic zones. Neither point is a criticism. Both are the ordinary condition of a new hybrid in its first year.
Blitz has not printed the market-size and foreign-exchange-saving figures circulating with this launch. They originate in a statement by the commercial partner rather than in a government dataset, and this desk does not carry a company’s own estimate of the market it sells into as though it were a national statistic.
What would settle the matter is straightforward and inexpensive. ICAR–IIMR could publish the multi-location trial data for both hybrids — expansion volume, yield and pest response by location and season — in its institutional record, as it does for its other releases; the Directorate of Maize Research’s zonal reports are the natural home for it. And the Ministry of Agriculture’s own crop statistics could begin to report popcorn maize as a separate line rather than folding it into maize, so that the country can see whether the import substitution actually happens. A hybrid is a claim until the third season. The way to make it a fact is to publish the seasons.
