India Is Building Clean Power Faster Than the Target Needs

NEW DELHI: Every energy story reports the milestone. Almost none reports the run-rate — which is the only number that tells you whether a 2030 commitment will actually be met. India’s run-rate, checked this month, is comfortably ahead.

India crossed 300 GW of non-fossil-fuel installed electricity generation capacity as on 31 July 2026, passing 60 per cent of its commitment to reach 500 GW by 2030. Installed solar photovoltaic capacity crossed 164 GW by the end of July, having grown from 2.8 GW in 2014. About 2,442.75 MW of solar was added in July alone, taking additions in the first seven months of 2026 to nearly 28.78 GW. In the first half of the calendar year India installed a record 29 GW of solar and wind together — roughly 26 GW of solar and 2.9 GW of wind, with solar installations running 43 per cent above the same period a year earlier.

From 2.8 GW to 164 GW: India’s installed solar capacity has grown roughly fifty-nine-fold since 2014, and added nearly 28.78 GW in the first seven months of 2026 alone.

India needs about 3.8 GW a month to reach 500 GW by 2030. Solar alone has been running at about 4.1 GW a month this year. For once, the arithmetic is on the comfortable side.

Do the arithmetic that the milestone announcements leave out. Two hundred gigawatts remain between 300 GW today and the 500 GW commitment, and roughly fifty-three months remain between August 2026 and the end of 2030. That is about 3.8 GW a month. Solar on its own has been added at close to 4.1 GW a month through 2026 so far, before wind, hydro, nuclear or biomass are counted at all. India is not merely on track; it is running with headroom, and that headroom is the buffer that will absorb the bad quarters that any construction programme has. It is also worth saying what capacity does not mean. Nameplate capacity is not generation: a gigawatt of solar produces power for a fraction of the day, and a system that is 60 per cent non-fossil by installed capacity is not 60 per cent non-fossil by units supplied. The two numbers are routinely conflated, and they should not be.

That gap between capacity and delivered energy is where the next decade of Indian energy policy will actually be decided, and it is a more interesting problem than the one the milestones describe. Solar arrives in the middle of the day; Indian peak demand arrives in the evening. Closing that offset requires storage, and transmission that can move surplus from the sun-rich west and north-west to the demand-heavy east and south. Neither is as visible as a solar park and both are harder to finance, because a battery or a transmission line earns its return from the reliability it creates rather than from the electricity it generates. The constructive proposal that follows from the numbers is a modest one: publish, alongside the monthly capacity addition, the monthly storage addition and the monthly inter-regional transfer capacity addition. India has proved it can build panels faster than the target requires. The next scoreboard should measure the things that let those panels count.
