Banking: Twelve Years of Jan Dhan
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed twelve years this week. The Press Information Bureau’s research unit, in an explainer posted on 27 August 2026, puts accounts at 59.09 crore and deposits at ₹3,16,514 crore as on 19 August 2026, with 32.92 crore women account-holders.
Telecom : Over 75,000 Handsets Traced
The Department of Telecommunications said on 28 August 2026 that its Sanchar Saathi platform had traced and returned more than 75,000 lost and stolen mobile handsets in a single month, the first time it has crossed that mark. The Union Minister of Communications, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, credited coordination between the department, the telecom service providers and state police forces.
Technology : A Sovereign AI Stack Launched
The Vice-President, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, launched Gnani Artha on 28 August 2026 — a stack made of Evon 3.3, a language model, and Plexus, the platform that puts it to work inside institutions. The Vice-President’s remarks turned on sovereign capability: that Indian engineers should build frontier technology and not only use it.
Defence : India and Kuwait Sit Down
The first meeting of the India–Kuwait Joint Defence Committee was held in New Delhi on 28 August 2026, with training, exercises, military medicine, staff talks, defence industry and research and development on the agenda. It operationalises the memorandum on defence cooperation signed during the Prime Minister’s visit to Kuwait in December 2024.
Economy : First Quarter Numbers on Monday
