Railways ramp up coal haul as power demand rises
NEW DELHI, 23 October: Indian Railways loaded more coal in the first 18 days of October 2026 than in any comparable period, the Ministry of Railways said. The ministry put the surge down to rising energy use, higher industrial output and weak rainfall in parts of the country. The second half of the picture is in a different document.

Panchayats get Rs 1.74 lakh crore for water, sanitation
NEW DELHI, 23 October: Panchayats will have nearly ₹1.74 lakh crore of Finance Commission money set aside for water and sanitation — about 40% of the more than ₹4.35 lakh crore the 16th Finance Commission has allocated to rural local bodies.
The figures were presented at a virtual conference with the States, the fourth in a series that followed the department’s Summit on Water on 1 and 2 September 2026. Its subject was how Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 will draw on those grants. The shift is from building taps to keeping them working: the first phase of the mission laid pipes to village homes; the second leans on panchayats to pay for operation and maintenance.
