CHENNAI: A spirited India eked out a fighting 4-3 win over Malaysia in the final to clinch the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament for the fourth time on August 12. India who were trailing 1-3 at one stage, rode on the vociferous crowd support to quell the challenge of the spirited Malaysians.
The pulsating final began with Malaysia seizing the early tempo. However, India’s Akashdeep quickly intercepted the ball, seemingly initiating an early attack. Malaysia’s Azrai tried to burst into the Indian circle from the left flank, but he was quickly halted by the stout defense of Jarmanpreet.
With Malaysia scoring three goals through Adnan, Hazeef and Sikandar, India looked down and out trailing 1-3. However, the never say die attitude of the hosts, saw them score goals through Harmanpreet, Gujrant and Akashdeepto clinch the title.
