NEW DELHI: If you were to summarise the inspiration and passion behind the works of artist Jyotsana Dwivedi in two words, it would be ‘plant life’.

Born into a family of passionate nature lovers, she started taking an interest in flora and fauna at a very young age, which gradually became both the muse and central subject of her artwork. In addition to being avid plant lovers, the vast knowledge of her family around plant cultivation further fueled her interest and curiosity about nature’s bounty. What also fascinated Jyotsana were folklores around plants, beliefs in their auspiciousness, and their uses in healing.

Her curiosity transitioned into maturity as she took up ‘Plant Life’ as a formal subject of her works at the Design School, where she started creating art inspired by the structure of flowers and seeds. At this juncture, another element made its way into her art, and that is human anatomy.

Human-plant ties Over the years, the relationship between humans and plants has become more intense and imaginary in her artworks as she delved deeper into a multidisciplinary area of plant studies in which literature, philosophy, art, science, and culture together generated new ways of thinking about plants and nature.

All these learnings got manifested in her art, which was witnessed in her exhibition at the Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi, from October 28 to November 3. Titled ‘DashteTalab’, the exhibition was inaugurated by eminent artist, sculptor and poet Satish Gupta.

Gupta defined Jyotsna’s creations as “like a whiff of spring, blossoming in the desert, and radiating a hidden power.” Further reflecting, he added: “Jyotsna’swork depicts a woman’s turbulent journey and her metamorphosis into a plant, which is inspiring.”
