New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has issued standard operating procedures (SoP) for doctors, officials and other staff members on cybersecurity. As per the guidelines, pen drives, USB and external storage will not be allowed on AIIMS network.
“Removable media (pen-drives / external hard disks etc) are a major source for spread of viruses and malicious software…their indiscriminate use can put the user as well as the institute data at risk,” an official communication by AIIMS stated.
AIIMS Delhi had faced a cyber attack on November 23 last year which had paralysed five of its servers. A case of extortion and cyber terrorism was registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit of the Delhi Police on November 25.
In February this year, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar had informed Parliament in a written reply that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERTIn) had evaluated the incident.
As per its analysis, five servers of AIIMS were affected by a cyber attack which had led to encryption of approximately 1.3 terabytes of data.
“As per preliminary analysis, servers were compromised due to improper network segmentation, which caused operational disruption due to non-functionality of critical applications,” the MoS said.
On the question of the number of cybersecurity incidents reported in the country in the last five years, the minister had informed that 4.5 million cases were reported and tracked during the said time period.
