NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 3, 2023, inaugurated the first 800 MW unit of the Telangana Super Thermal Power Project’s Phase 1, hailing it as a significant stride towards India’s energy objectives.

Located in the Peddapalli district, this NTPC initiative is set to deliver cost-effective electricity to Telangana, propelling the state’s economic progress. Notably, the power station is designed to be among the nation’s top-tier facilities in terms of environmental compliance.

During his address, the Prime Minister mentioned that the project’s second unit would soon commence operations. Once the entirety of the second phase becomes operational, the plant’s total capacity will grow to 4000 MW. He emphasized the modernity of the plant, and said it’s NTPC’s most state-of-the-art facility in India.

Highlighting the broader implications, PM Modi stated: “A consistent electricity supply acts as a catalyst in propelling industrial growth within a region.”

Phase-I of the Telangana Project is being established at an approved cost of Rs 10,998 crore on land available on the premises of NTPC’s existing Ramagundam station and would supply 85% of its power to Telangana.

Being a pit head power station with ultra-supercritical technology, the project will also help Telangana with low-cost power. Further, being the most efficient power station of NTPC in India, it will reduce specific coal consumption and CO2 emissions.
