Acelebration of lights, Diwali is an occasion to honour the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and right over wrong. As people around the world gather with family and friends to light diyas, decorate homes, offer prayers, or exchange gifts and food, we are reminded to look to the year ahead with optimism and hope.”
These words were uttered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose country lies approximately 11,500 km away from the heartland of Diwali celebrations – India.
In Canada, the warmth of Indian culture resonates not only within the Indian diaspora but also within the hearts of Canadians themselves, as well as their Government.
In a notable gesture last year, Canada Post joined in the Diwali festivities by issuing a commemorative stamp on the occasion. The exquisite design of the 2022 Diwali stamp artfully captures the essence of the festival, showcasing the illumination of tiny lamps and the exuberant bursts of fireworks. .
Canada Post’s recognition of the significance of Diwali extends beyond 2022. In 2017, 2020, and 2021 also, it released Diwali stamps, alongside highlighting other key holidays and events that hold deep meaning for the South Asian community.
