NEW DELHI: iPhones exports from India touched a record Rs10,000 crore in the month of May alone. Another peek at the iPhone exports figures reveal that in the April and May alone, export of the US based mobile crossed Rs 20,000 cr ($ 2.4 billion), something which has not happened in India’s smartphone export history.
Apple had launched its manufacturing barely a year back, With this India has emerged as one of the leading producers of iPhones outside China.
The main reason for this phenomenal level of production of iPhones is being driven by the Production- Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
This a incentive from the Government which incentivises and encourages foreign companies to set up manufacturing in India. The PLI scheme was announced by the Govt in 2017.
Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar credited the PLI scheme for the record export of the iPhones, “This (iPhone) export is a very important milestone in India’s evaluation as a global hub for an electronics global value chain. Just a few years ago, PM Modi announced the PLI scheme, and then he announced Atmanirbhar economic thinking for the country.”
