NEW DELHI: Human spaceflight is won in unglamorous places — test rigs, water tanks and load frames, long before anyone reaches a launch pad. This month the Indian Space Research Organisation announced it had cleared three significant qualification tests on the Gaganyaan crew module, each addressing a moment in the flight where there is no room for error. One qualified the primary flotation unit that rights the capsule after splashdown. A second tested the mechanism separating the umbilical links between crew and service modules. A third established that the crew-module structure can bear the loads generated when the parachute-protecting cover separates.
Read together, they describe a programme methodically retiring risk. The sequence ahead is deliberately conservative: Gaganyaan G1, the first uncrewed test flight under India’s human spaceflight programme, is being built for the third quarter of 2026, designed to prove the crew module, verify life-support systems, validate astronaut safety equipment and rehearse recovery after splashdown. G2 is planned for late in the year carrying the humanoid robot Vyommitra in the seat a human will later occupy. Only after those trials succeed does the first crewed mission fly, currently planned for 2027.

A space programme is judged by its launches and built by its tests. India is spending this year on the second, so that the first, when it comes, carries someone home safely.

The patience on display is itself the achievement. A crewed launch is the most consequential thing a space agency can attempt, and the temptation to compress a schedule for the sake of a date is real in every programme that has tried. ISRO’s sequencing — uncrewed first, robot second, humans third — is the discipline that separates a space programme built to last from one built for a headline. Each test that passes is a margin added; each that reveals a flaw is a life protected years in advance.
The constructive way forward is to hold that line and keep building the ecosystem around it. Gaganyaan has already pulled Indian industry, academia and a young private space sector into work of genuine technical difficulty, from life-support engineering to recovery operations at sea. The wider payoff runs past the mission itself: the materials, avionics and human-rating standards developed here become national capability. India is approaching the small club of nations that can carry their own citizens to orbit, and approaching it the right way — carefully, publicly, and on the evidence of tests that pass.
