Three Papers Withdrawn, and What the Committee Found

NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency will re-run three UGC-NET papers next month. The notice is short. The list of defects inside it is the document worth reading.

By a public notice issued on 16 August 2026, the National Testing Agency said it would re-conduct the UGC-NET June 2026 examinations in English, Commerce and Sociology after a committee examined the question papers and found multiple errors. The re-tests are scheduled for 9 September — English from 9 am to noon, Commerce from 3 pm to 6 pm — and Sociology on 10 September from 9 am to noon. Candidates will not pay any additional examination fee.

The committee’s findings are more specific than the phrase “multiple errors” suggests, and the specificity is what makes them fixable. The defects recorded include factual mistakes, typographical errors and translation errors between language versions; misspelt names of scholars and garbled book titles; grammatical faults including gender and number agreement; punctuation errors; non-standard coined terms used in place of established concepts; and the repetition of a significant number of questions from previous examinations. Read together, that is not a security failure of the kind a paper leak represents. It is a quality-assurance failure at the item-writing and proofing stage — a different problem, with a different remedy.

Three subjects, two mornings: UGC-NET candidates in English and Commerce return on 9 September and Sociology candidates on 10 September, with no further examination fee payable.

A leaked paper is a security failure. A misspelt scholar’s name inside the paper is a proofing failure. They need opposite remedies.

At a Glance

• Notice dated: 16 August 2026
• Papers withdrawn: English, Commerce, Sociology
• English re-test: 9 September, 9 am to 12 noon
• Commerce re-test: 9 September, 3 pm to 6 pm
• Sociology re-test: 10 September, 9 am to 12 noon
• Fee: no additional fee for candidates
• Defect one: factual, typographical and translation errors
• Defect two: misspelt scholar names, garbled book titles
• Defect three: grammar, agreement and punctuation faults
• Defect four: repeated questions from earlier papers
The distinction matters because the two failure modes call for different investment. Security failures are answered with logistics, surveillance and chain-of-custody — the sort of thing a procurement tender buys. Item-quality failures are answered with people: a subject expert panel that writes to a published style guide, an independent reviewer who has not seen the item bank, a translation desk with domain vocabulary rather than general fluency, and a duplication check run against every previous paper in the archive before a set is finalised. None of that is expensive relative to the scale of a national eligibility test. It is simply a different line in the budget.

The agency has done the right thing in withdrawing the papers rather than adjusting scores after the fact, and in waiving the fee. The constructive next step is to publish what the committee actually recommended, alongside the notice that cancelled the papers. Candidates who spent months preparing are owed more than a new date; a public account of how the item bank will be reviewed — and a commitment to run a duplication check as standard — would do more for confidence in the examination than any assurance issued without one.
