NEW DELHI: THE Navy Week this year honoured the Indian Navy’s pivotal role in the 1971 India-Pakistan war, particularly the success of Operation Trident. The annual event – shifted from traditional Mumbai bases to promote maritime awareness – featured a spectacular operational demonstration at Shangumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
As Chief Guest on December 3-4, President Droupadi Murmu witnessed coordinated maneuvres by warships, submarines, naval aircraft, and special forces like MARCOS. The display highlighted India’s indigenous platforms under ‘Make in India’, showcasing power projection, precision strikes, rescue operations, and combat readiness in the Indian Ocean region.
The Navy Week celebration in Mumbai included a Beating Retreat and Tattoo Ceremony at Gateway of India on December 8, with helicopter flypasts, precision drills, Sailor’s Hornpipe dance, and musical performances by the Naval Symphonic Orchestra. Open ships for public visits, veteran lunches, quizzes, half marathons, and blood donation camps engaged communities nationwide. The events underscored the Indian Navy’s vigilance over maritime borders and trade routes, reinforcing its status as the preferred security partner.
