PUNE-based Serum Institute of India (SII) has become a cornerstone in global healthcare, providing lifesaving vaccines at affordable prices to various countries. In Tanzania, it plays a crucial role in supporting public health by supplying vaccines for diseases such as polio, measles, and diphtheria.
These vaccines have been pivotal in largescale immunisation efforts aimed primarily at children. Through collaboration with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health, SII has helped reduce the incidence of vaccinepreventable diseases, contributing to a decline in child mortality and improving overall public health outcomes.
SII also works closely with global health organisations like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Unicef. These partnerships ensure the financial sustainability of Tanzania’s immunisation programmes by offering vaccines at reduced costs or, in some cases, free of charge. The affordable pricing of SII’s vaccines has enabled Tanzania to save millions of dollars, ensuring that the Government can invest in other areas of healthcare. The Serum Institute’s contribution has significantly enhanced the country’s capacity to manage and prevent disease outbreaks.
