NEW DELHI: In an address at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Union Foreign Minister S Jaishankar emphasised India’s approach to foreign policy, highlighting the nation’s rich history and cultural identity as pivotal influences.

During the Pandit Hriday Nath Kunzru Memorial Lecture, titled ‘Bharat and the World,’ on February 26, Jaishankar articulated India’s strategic stance.

“Our approach should not be clouded by imported ideologies and global conformism. Instead, there is a selfassured analysis on how our national goals are best advanced, coupled with the experiences we share with others and the empathy this generates,” Jaishankar said, underscoring the importance of a self-assured analysis rooted in national goals and shared experiences, fostering empathy and understanding.

Highlighting the significance of maintaining a distinct identity while seeking common ground, Jaishankar asserted, “Bharat will never shy away from questions but will have the courage to question the questioners.”

The School of International Studies, commemorating its 70th year, plans to host an academic conference in October with the theme ‘Non-western traditions of International Relations.’

Dean Amitabh Mattoo outlined the institution’s commitment to showcasing ‘Bhartiya thinking’ on global affairs through monthly policy briefs and exclusive media engagements, further solidifying its expertise in foreign policy, diplomacy, and international relations.

Jaishankar has a personal connection to JNU, before qualifying for Indian Foreign Services in 1977, he did his MA in Political Science, MPhil and PhD from the University.
