shindhu jhaNEW DELHI: For farm transportation and uplifting rural economies, the Union Government has taken two groundbreaking initiatives, the Kisan Rail service and the Krishi Udan Scheme. These programmes have significantly streamlined the movement of perishable goods, providing farmers, particularly those in remote and marginalized regions, with greater access to markets.

According to government sources, since its inception in August 2020, the Kisan Rail service has played a pivotal role in transforming the agricultural logistics landscape. Over the period up to December 15, 2023, 2,364 Kisan Rail services have been operated, transporting approximately 7.93 lakh tonnes of perishable goods.

Furthermore, the 50 per cent subsidy on transportation of fruits and vegetables through Kisan Rail continued till last year. Thereafter, 45 per cent subsidy was given by Ministry of Railways, demonstrating the government’s commitment to agricultural development and farmer welfare.

Potential circuits for movement of vegetables, fruits and other perishables are identified in consultation with Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries Departments of State Governments as well as local bodies and agencies, Mandis etc., and based on operational feasibility, Kisan Rail services are run.

On the other hand, complementing the efforts of the Kisan Rail service is the Krishi Udan Scheme. It was launched in August 2020 to ensure seamless, cost effective, time- bound air transportation and associated logistics for the agricultural produce from North East, hilly and tribal areas.

To facilitate and incentivise movement of agri-produce, the scheme envisages waiver of landing charges, parking charges, etc. With a network covering 58 airports nationwide, including 25 in priority regions and 33 others in different parts of the country, the scheme aims to bridge the gap between farmers and markets.
