NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has directed the Rajasthan Government to take action against industrial units polluting the Bandi, Luni and Jojari rivers, including the removal of factories found to be operating illegally.
The court has also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the network of illegal industries operating on residential and agricultural land.
A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued directions to the Rajasthan Government and the authorities concerned to address industrial pollution, illegal activities and violations of land-use regulations affecting the three river systems.
The court observed that the problem extends beyond individual industrial units and includes inadequate effluent treatment capacity, illegal industrial operations, irregularities in land use and ineffective monitoring.
It directed authorities to immediately seal or remove identified illegal discharge points, bypass arrangements, manholes, chambers, pipelines and drains that have already been approved for removal.
