PRIME Minister Narendra Modi on March 11 announced that India has successfully tested Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. The new capability allows the weapon system to deliver multiple nuclear warheads against different targets spread across hundreds of kilometres.

“Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology,” tweeted PM Modi.

With the test of Mission Divyastra, India has joined the select group of nations that have MIRV capability. MIRVs have been developed by the US, UK, Russia, France and China.

This system is equipped with indigenous avionics systems and high-accuracy sensor packages, which ensure that the re-entry vehicles reach the target points within the desired accuracy. The capability is an enunciator of India’s growing technological prowess. “Various telemetry and radar stations tracked and monitored multiple re-entry vehicles. The mission accomplished the designed parameters,” the defence ministry said in statement, calling it a complex mission.

The Agni-5 missile, an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with a range of 5,500 to 5,800 kilometres, marks a pivotal enhancement in India’s strategic defence arsenal.

This development is particularly significant as it aims to bolster India’s nuclear deterrence, especially against potential threats from the eastern frontiers.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on success of Mission Divyastra.

The state-of-the-art technology developed indigenously is a firm step in the direction of India becoming Atmanirbhar, the President said and expressed confidence they will keep moving apace in their quest for excellence and self-reliance.
