Noida Metro extension Sector 142 to Botanical Garden

NEW DELHI: In a major push for urban mobility in the National Capital Region (NCR), the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the extension of the Noida Metro Rail Project recently. The new corridor, stretching 11.56 kilometres from Sector 142 to the existing Botanical Garden station, is set to add eight elevated stations to the city’s transit network.

The approval marks a significant expansion of the mass transit system in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district. Once operational, the new link will expand the active Metro Rail network in Noida and Greater Noida to a total length of 61.62 kilometres, according to a PIB press release.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the developmental impact of the decision on the satellite city. “A boost to ‘Ease of Living’ for the people of Noida! The Cabinet has approved the extension corridor from Noida Sector 142 to Botanical Garden (Noida). This decision will add momentum to Noida’s development journey. Congestion will be reduced significantly as well,” he posted on X.

The primary objective of the project is to provide seamless connectivity to several high-density residential and commercial zones that lack efficient public transport options. The alignment is designed to integrate key zones of Noida, creating a direct link for commuters travelling to major employment hubs, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

A critical feature of the project is its integration with the existing Delhi Metro network. The corridor will offer an interchange at the Botanical Garden station, connecting commuters to the busy Blue Line (Noida City Centre-Dwarka Sector 21) and the Magenta Line (Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden), which provides access to the airport.

The primary objective of the project is to provide seamless connectivity to several high-density residential and commercial zones that lack efficient public transport options. The alignment is designed to integrate key zones of Noida, creating a direct link for commuters travelling to major employment hubs, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

The eight stations along the 11.56 km stretch are strategically positioned to serve a mix of commercial and residential catchments. The corridor will provide direct connectivity to prominent commercial centres such as Advant Business Park in Sector 142, Skymark One Mall in Sector 98 and the Mall of Noida in Sector 93.

Crucially, the route will service the burgeoning IT and corporate corridor of Noida. Major multinational corporations and IT parks in the vicinity — including the offices of Microsoft in Sector 145, TCS in Sector 157, and Infosys, Adobe and Oracle in Sectors 132, 135 and 127, respectively, — will be brought within the ambit of the metro network. This is expected to significantly ease the daily commute for thousands of professionals.

The corridor also addresses social infrastructure needs by improving access to educational institutes like Amity University in Sector 125 and healthcare facilities, most notably the Max Super Specialty Hospital in Sector 128.

Beyond immediate connectivity, the Cabinet’s decision is rooted in a broader vision of sustainable urban development. Officials believe the extension will act as a catalyst for economic growth by reducing travel times and improving access to business districts and transportation hubs, including Delhi’s airport and railway stations.

The enhanced connectivity is also expected to spur investment and development in regions along the new corridor.
From an environmental perspective, the project is expected to contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions by offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based transport. By providing an efficient alternative to road transport, the corridor is projected to alleviate traffic congestion on key routes, leading to smoother vehicular movement, reduced travel time and enhanced road safety.

The project is being positioned not merely as an infrastructure upgrade but as a transformative step in shaping Noida’s urban future. By addressing key challenges of congestion and accessibility, the extension aims to provide more equitable access to public transport for diverse socio-economic groups.

With the integration of commercial, corporate and residential zones, the Sector 142-Botanical Garden corridor is expected to become a vital artery for the city, promising a higher quality of life for residents and a boost to the region’s economic trajectory.
