NEW DELHI: India’s transition to E20 (20 pc ethanol-blended petrol) is gaining momentum as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, strengthen energy security and lower transport-sector emissions. However, the shift has also triggered widespread concerns among vehicle owners over fuel efficiency, engine compatibility, maintenance costs, warranty coverage and legal liability.
One of the biggest concerns is fuel economy. Since ethanol contains less energy than conventional petrol, E20 is expected to deliver slightly lower mileage. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has acknowledged that some vehicles could experience a reduction in fuel efficiency of up to five per cent. Although the Government maintains that the environmental and economic benefits of ethanol blending outweigh this drawback, many consumers remain apprehensive about higher running costs over the lifetime of their vehicles.
Compatibility issue
Compatibility with existing vehicles is another major issue. Millions of older cars and two-wheelers currently on Indian roads were not originally designed for E20 fuel. Owners are uncertain whether long-term use of higher ethanol blends could affect engine components, fuel lines, rubber seals or overall vehicle performance. Limited public awareness and varying communication from automobile manufacturers have added to the uncertainty.

Consumer concerns have also extended to warranty and insurance coverage. Motorists are seeking clarity on whether manufacturers or insurers could deny claims if vehicle damage is attributed to ethanol-blended fuel, particularly in models that were not originally certified for E20 use. Legal disputes over E20 compatibility have further highlighted the need for clear policies defining manufacturer responsibility and consumer rights during the transition.
Amid these concerns, fresh research by scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has provided scientific evidence that could help address many of these fears. The study, led by Professor Avinash Kumar Agarwal with Project Scientist Dhruv Raj Karana, evaluated engine performance, durability, fuel economy and emissions across multiple ethanol blends in both older and newer vehicles.
The researchers found no scientific evidence that E20 petrol causes engine damage under normal operating conditions. Their experiments showed that concerns linking E20 to corrosion, accelerated engine wear or mechanical failure were not supported by scientific data. The team also examined fuel economy and found that mileage losses generally remained below 5 per cent, with some differences falling within normal experimental variation.
Environmental benefits
According to the researchers, vehicles can operate safely on E20 when fuel quality standards are maintained and manufacturer recommendations are followed. The study also highlighted the potential environmental benefits of ethanol blending through lower emissions and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
While the IIT Kanpur findings provide reassurance, experts say public confidence will depend on transparent communication from vehicle manufacturers, clear warranty and insurance guidelines, stronger consumer awareness and consistent regulatory standards.
