Yet the same technologies that have democratised communication have also enabled misinformation to flourish on an unprecedented scale. Today, falsehoods spread with remarkable speed, often outpacing facts and leaving lasting damage in their wake.
The rise of social media has fundamentally altered the way information is consumed. Unlike traditional journalism, where stories undergo editorial checks and fact verification, online content is often shared instantly with little regard for accuracy. A misleading headline, an edited video, or a fabricated claim can go viral within minutes, fuelled by algorithms that reward engagement rather than truth. Sensational content generates clicks, shares, and reactions, making misinformation a commodity in the attention economy.
The consequences are grave. False information has influenced elections, undermined trust in democratic institutions, and fuelled conspiracy theories. During health crises, misleading medical advice has discouraged vaccinations and promoted dangerous remedies. Rumours circulated online have also triggered communal tensions, panic buying, and incidents of violence. Once misinformation gains momentum, correcting it becomes difficult because retractions rarely receive the same attention as the original falsehood.
Equally worrying is the erosion of critical thinking. In an age of information overload, many users consume headlines without reading the full story or verifying the source.
Confirmation bias encourages people to accept information that reinforces their beliefs while rejecting inconvenient facts. The result is a fragmented public sphere where opinion increasingly overshadows evidence and lowers trust in credible institutions. The response cannot rest solely with governments or technology companies.

Governments should establish fair and accountable regulatory frameworks without compromising civil liberties. Schools and universities must make media literacy an essential life skill, teaching students how to question sources, identify manipulation, and evaluate evidence.
