NEW DELHI: The Mecca Agreement enshrines a collective security arrangement modelled on Article 5 of NATO, with its official announcement stating that “any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all.”
It enables Saudi Arabia to finance and fund defence projects; Turkey to provide deep tech defence equipment; and Pakistan to provide manpower at the frontline; however, analysts have noted that it was unlikely to extend the deterrence of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons to cover either Saudi Arabia or Turkey.
The trilateral pact has been described as a “major change” in Middle East geopolitics, and the first institutional arrangement of its kind in the region. The trilateral pact was signed amid rising regional tensions in the Middle East.
