Water Prices

NEW DELHI: Access to clean water is a fundamental necessity, but how it is packaged, priced, and consumed varies worldwide. While municipal tap water is safe and free in some regions, bottled water remains a mandatory daily purchase in others. We look at a standard 1-liter bottle of drinking water through the lens of minutes of labour or a work-time index examining how municipal infrastructure, local manufacturing, and purchasing power shape an everyday essential.

India :(2-3 minutes of work)
Priced at average Rs 20 ($0.24), a 1-liter packaged drinking water bottle takes less than three minutes of work for an average urban formal worker. High reliance on bottled water for daily travel and dining keeps volume sales massive.

United Kingdom : (3-4 minutes of work)
At around £0.90 (Rs 95) for a 1-litre bottle. Reliable municipal tap infrastructure keeps bottled water purchases focused on on-the-go hydration.

United States: (4-5 minutes of work)
A 1-liter bottle costs roughly $1.80 (Rs 150). High-margin single-serve bottled water requires under five minutes of work.

West Asia : (2-3 minutes of work)
In metropolitan Gulf centres, a 1-liter bottled water costs around Rs 50 ($0.60). Given hyper-arid climate and reliance on desalinated municipal supplies, cheap bottled water requires only 2 to 3 minutes of labour.

Africa : (12–18 minutes of work)
A 1-liter bottled water averaging Rs 65 ($0.75) requires 12 to 18 minutes of work. In areas where tap water is less reliable, bottled water functions as a health necessity.

Singapore
(1-2 minutes of work)
Costing approximately SGD 1.40 (Rs 90), a 1-liter bottle demands less than 2 minutes of median work time. With high-quality tap water easily available, bottled water remains an impulse purchase.

Brazil : (4-5 minutes of work)
At BRL 4.00 (Rs 65), a 1-liter bottle requires around 4 to 5 minutes. It is a staple daily purchase at beach kiosks and street markets.

China : (2-3 minutes of work)
Priced around CNY 3.00 (Rs35), a standard 1-litre bottle takes roughly 2 to 3 minutes of work. Mass production and rapid e-commerce keep bottled water affordable.

Russia : (2-3 minutes of work)
A standard 1-liter bottle costs RUB 45 (Rs 40), taking less than 3 minutes of work, Abundant freshwater resources and competitive bottling keep drinking water cheap and accessible.
