National Democratic Alliance candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar swept the election for the post of the Vice-President of India in a contest that once again put the spotlight on the Opposition’s inability to put up a show of unity against the BJP. Former West Bengal Governor and Rajasthan Jat leader defeated Congress veteran Margaret Alva (528- 182) in the contest where only MPs could vote. Congratulating Dhankhar on his election as the V-P, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it was a proud moment for the country to have a “Kisan Putra (farmer’s son) Vice President”.
